Their deepest wounds unhealed-with pitiless fates impatiently lying in wait to savage minds and bodies and rot away their spirits. Indeed, too many had later died as a result of their service-a pain without measure. His eyes were drawn skyward, following a nurse’s gaze ever searching for the dust-off chopper that would never come, and sighed in resignation that salvation was not upon the wind that day. And then he sat alone at the edge of the grass in the park-like setting…his eyes brushing The Wall’s black granite…feeling the presence…drawing strength and a comforting peace that it always gave so freely. The Amish Warehouse donated 15 percent of all furniture sales and 5 percent of gift sales to the Library. Maybe they want me to do something dramatic, like croak, in time for the five o’clock follies, he grinned. Screw´em…I’m gonna live forever-or maybe not, he thought. He felt tired and exhausted from this gusty day, this week…this life…with its ever-present aches. He felt like a grumpy, gnarly, barkless old tangled tree too many bears had itched against. But he was mostly just grumpy-tired of being tired. We also gave our yearly scholarship to an Iraq Veteran who was the son of a Vietnam Veteran.

We don’t require that a veteran be connected in any way but it was nice to give this one out because of the two veteran connections. We continue to support the Etowah County Free Clinic every quarter with a donation. It has brought free health care to many people who would otherwise have to go without. We have seen our country at war in Afghanistan and Iraq; we have seen the economy go up and down. We watch as the servicemen and women loose their lives in war and come home to their loved ones. We are seeing the Vietnam War fought again in the political arena. TAPS is always in need of front office volunteers to help us respond to the public by answer phone calls, processing applications, and helping to greet customers and handle animals for meetings with potential adopters. There are many components to volunteering at the front desk and there is a large learning curve. Front desk volunteers should be able to multi-task, remain calm in hectic situations, and be flexible in an ever-evolving environment. Additionally, front desk volunteers should be willing to learn by observation and be self-motivated to take the initiative to jump in and help where needed. We have voted to build a Veterans Cemetery in Baldwin County. We have procured the land and the Federal VA along with Senator Sessions has also procured funding. We have been moved back one year by the Federal VA for their share of the funding ( $ 26 Million Dollars) . If you have never played bingo before, no worries! They have staff members dedicated to helping new bingo players. Many of our cats are free roaming in open cat rooms and they love for our volunteers to sit and play with them. They loved to be brushed and have interactive play with string toys. For our cats in kennels, they enjoy volunteers to take them into an acquaintance room to pet them and give them an opportunity to stretch their legs. Acquaintance room availability may be limited in early morning hours and late afternoon/early evening hours.
We have had booths set up at some of the biker’s poker runs to meet some of the veterans involved with them. This is possibly the largest bingo hall in the southeast. We are on track with the fourth Veterans Home to be built in Pell City. We are still in the first phase and have let a contract to an architect . We should receive a proposed design within the next couple of months. The design is a combination of input from the current healthcare provider’s staff, the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs , and the Veterans Homes Committee. Once the design is accepted by the Veterans Home Committee it will be submitted to the full board for acceptance. If you have not been attending your Chapter or State Council meetings, why not make this the time to get involved. We as your voice need your input, without it we will never know if you agree or not. Plus we are friends at a different level due to the Vietnam War. Flags for Veterans Graves — American Legion Post 1910 and VFW Post 6051 of Woodland Park will place flags on the graves of our veterans, 10 a.m., Woodland Park Cemetery, 650 Short Ave., Woodland Park. All military veterans and public invited to attend; , post1980.org. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 29th, 2016 from 2pm-4pm at Hovie Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at Hovie Funeral Home at 4pm with Brother John Hascall officiating. Memorials may be left to The VFW post #3676, The local Salvation Army, or St. Judes Children’s Hospital. Arrangements are in the care of Hovie Funeral Home. After the parade there are horse-drawn carriage rides and a live performance by Jack Sparrow in the park. Afterwards, we adjourned to the post to enjoy breakfast and to listen to our Commander, Tero Cumpian, speak on his service in the Korean War. Still, the family found some time to celebrate Alana’s seventh birthday. Sheridan Bingo The Sheridan VFW Post 5065 hosts a community bingo night open to the public at 6 p.m.
The goal of this trip is to bring awareness to the SMVCA’s goals and to help our York County community. Forrest Mansur of Heritage Memorials will be doing a self-supported bicycle ride from Maine to Key West to benefit Southern Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery Association Beautification Project. The Veterans Association has been working on this project for over two years and this is why Forrest has volunteered for this fund raising ride. They rolled him the few yards to see nearby old glory…and she was glorious, catching the cool breeze, rippling gently, as only such beauty could with dazzling colors perfectly backlit by the sun. He thought, if only you could talk…what stories you could tell. The flag always brought joy, and sometimes a lump to his throat, as it waved-to, ever so slowly, then-fro with a crisp snap. At another time…another place…we flew old glory and oh how we cheered to see her fly…but they made us take her down. The wounded, dying, dead warrior cradled in the nurses´ arms…her grief and compassion frozen in recognition that his spirit had left the body, and were it possible by will alone, she would have brought him back. There was no shortage of volunteers to wheel him wherever he wanted to go-where the heck were they ten years ago? And no shortage of reporters asking if he knew yesterday’s passing of that-other-guy made him the last living Vietnam Veteran? Of course he knew, but still found it odd that somehow such circumstances could make him famous. We have purchased a house and had it moved to some land that Larry Payne has leased to the Chapter. The chapter has been involved in getting the State Government to pass a bill so the POW/MIA flag can be flown on state buildings. Chapter 373 has been very active the past year with our fund raisers and local projects. Chapter # 502 is heavily involved in community activities. We continue to arrange the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. The Honor Guard performs at all ceremonies as well at military funerals. I often hear that the reason people don’t attend their meetings is “They don’t do anything”. That is even more reason for you to attend, get involved and change the negatives to positives. We need volunteers to work at our informational tables, collect donations, or help handle a dog. When handling dogs at our off-site events, responsible handling is always our focus. Dog handlers are asked to keep dogs a minimum of 6 feet away from each other, monitor their body language for comfort of situation, and interact with the public to answer questions about the dog you are handling. At off-site events, our volunteers are the face of TAPS, and are serving as a representative of our organization.
