I do recommend driving a smaller vehicle if you plan to park in the garage. There was a small parking lot across from the hotel, but it did not have a fence around it or anything. We stayed 2 nights there earlier this summer. St. L is not a tourist hot spot but the campgrounds is OK and safe and convienent to St. Louis sightseeing. It is not especially kid friendly though.
The park was not at all crowded while we were here; our side was probably half full at most, and the other side was even emptier. A completely full park might well feel kind of cramped given the parking lot vibe here.
