And a series can embrace its cultural idiosyncracy without losing universality. It’s easy enough for those of us not on the east coast to infer that when the characters refer to the “RNC” they mean the police…even if it might take us a bit to realize it stands for “Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.” But there are those that buck the trend, unselfconsciously rooting their stories in the world their characters live. I’m not actually a big fan of the private eye dramedy, Republic of Doyle — but I’m the first to say that what gives it a flavour and tone all its own is its Newfoundland setting. Bomb Girls has been a very successful series and received a Gracie Award last February for Outstanding Drama. The second series will also look at the family aspect as opposed to the political and economic ones. It will start with the new generation as Ted Kennedy finds himself with the weight of the world on his shoulders. The expectations of the American people were enormous and the hope for change appeared to have faded with the death of Robert, especially for African Americans. Ted was the only man left in the family and had to care for fifteen children. The series will end with Ted Kennedy’s speech supporting Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign.
